Message from the Scientific Director, W. Dalton Dietrich, III, Ph.D.

August 25, 2010 -- The recent ruling by a federal judge to temporarily halt the use of federal funds to support new research in the area of embryonic stem cell research is very damaging to the field of regenerative medicine. A direct impact of this ruling is that 22 recently approved NIH programs will not be given new monies in the immediate future to initiate or continue their important studies. This will cause serious problems for scientists in terms of maintaining existing stem cell lines and completing critical studies.  We believe that continued research using both embryonic and adult stems cells needs to be promoted as we investigate their potential to repair and promote recovery in individuals with all neurological disorders including spinal cord injury. Scientists need to be given every possible tool in which to solve these complicated problems and this new ruling will prohibit advances by excellent  scientists in the field of stem cell biology and regenerative medicine.
