Gymnast Walks Just Days After Major Spinal Injury


February 13, 2011 -- Eyeing a spot in Cirque de Soleil, 20-year-old Jorge Valdes was practicing a double flip routine when he landed directly on his head, dislocating two vertebrae and injuring his spine, leaving him unable to walk. Jorge, along with his neurosurgeon, Dr. Steven Vanni, joined TODAY’s Lester Holt to discuss the remarkable recovery and treatment, which included hypothermia that was pioneered by Miami Project to Cure Paralysis researchers.
